About the LifeBubbles Community

LifeBubbles is an open-source collaborative project to design and build sustainable communities and human habitat systems - starting at the "small is beautiful" scale.

Observe the absurdly wasteful ways cities, with their enormous ecological foot-prints, blight the planet today. It doesn’t have to be like this, and this energises us to evolve new more eco-logical design paradigms.

We are Engineers, Artists, Musicians, Horticulturalists, Agronomists, Inventors, Students, Planners, Software Designers, Builders, Landscape Architects, Material Scientists, Activists, Educators, Chefs, Health Professionals - yes, we are anyone who wants to co-create paradise on earth and make a difference to our chances of survival as a species. If this is you, then we welcome you to become part of our rapidly growing LifeBubbles community. Together we can change the way buildings, cities and their life support systems, are created.

Why the name LifeBubbles?

The Biosphere is a giant bubble that encloses all life on earth. It protects us like a cocoon, but like any bubble, it can pop if it is pushed beyond its elastic limit! But bubbles can also come in different sizes and in a variety of colours. Bubbles are dynamic and fun to play with, so what better name for a project that aims to design and create micro-biospheres that will support human life for millennia to come!

How to get involved

Start by connecting with us. Contribute a constructive ideas or comments here. That's the first step! Your idea will be acknowledged and you automatically become a LifeBubbles FutureSmith and part of the movement. You will have all the LifeBubbles Community's web resources, ideas, wiki pages and blogs available to you as they evolve. You will be invited to participate and share in workshops, working bees and webcasts as they are organised. LifeBubbles is an open, life-affirming movement to envision and then create a wonderful future for humanity. It rejects the pessimistic alternative of resigning yourself to the inevitable catastrophe of business as usual - and doing nothing.

That is why we need you to join us as a FutureSmith. We need your ideas, creativity and courage to help us create a thriving future we can all share.

In our future biosphere paradise, there will be some "must have" life support technologies to provide us with comfortable livable spaces that shelter us from radiation and the elements, that replenish fresh air, clean and recycle water and produce abundant healthy food and better ways to store it.

There is room in our vision for some "nice to have" technologies too, that give us pleasure, help sharpen our intellects, understand the world around us, feed our curiosity, help us learn to communicate and exchange ideas, build philosophy and culture and connect us to the cosmos, our origins and help us discover our destiny.

LifeBubbles is an attempt to envision and then create a temporal paradise for humans. Don't postpone paradise until you're dead. Create it now! An eco-sensitive future can give us all the essential human life support services as well as many of the nice-to-have technologies, using only solar energy, just like in natural ecosystems.

The natural treasures of life, a wealth of colour, bizarre patterns and awe-inspiring diversity are all based on these few simple and inescapable ecological principles.

• 1. Liquid water is the universal solvent of life chemistry.

  2. Matter is continually assembled and recycled through ecosystems - nothing in nature is wasted.

  3. Respect decay and death. They are the other vital side of growth and life.

  4. Solar energy is the golden currency of life - it flows through every food chain - always precious. Even in its "lowest" state as heat, it is not wasted.

  5. Human consciousness is one apex of an unfolding life drama of ever-increasing patterns of complexity.

  6. Almost everything in the biosphere is linked and inter-dependent.
